Project Description

Impact-resistant polystyrene (or high-impact polystyrene or HIPS) is made of polystyrene and styrene-butadiene rubber (or SBR). The result is a less breakable plastic than the general polystyrene.

Compared to the most common polystyrene, the impact-resistant one has a higher tenacity, that is a higher elongation to failure (HIPS can have a significant deformation up to 40% before breaking) and a higher impact resistance.

Impact-resistant polystyrene can be used for toys, cooler parts and household appliances packaging.

Applications of impact-resistant polystyrene:

  • packaging

  • toys

  • cooler parts

  • household appliances
